SigmaSigma SLR camera at Photokina 2008 : Sigma was also present at the Photokina 2008. In addition to the announcement of a series of new lenses, among which the 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG HSM with a considerably smaller build than that of Nikon's own bright 24-70mm lens, Sigma also announced the development of the second generation DSLR and compact camera models. The Sigma SD15 and Sigma DP2 are both based on Foveon's 4.7x3 megapixel sensor; however, they will be equipped with a new processor called True II. This processor has to ensure an improved processing speed (for example for continuous shooting) and should increase the overall image quality. Sigma showcased both products to the public behind glass.

Backstage, the press and dealers were able to admire a number of demo models of the SD15 and DP2. The two cameras are still in a too premature stage to draw conclusions. We will certainly come back to it as soon as the full production models are available. The Sigma DP2 features a 24.2mm f/2.8 lens, equivalent of 41mm at a 35mm SLR camera. This focal length is able to offer more creative possibilities and will be extremely interesting for the street and nature photographer. Two aspheric glass lenses should be able to deliver high image quality. The Super Multi-layer Coating of the lens reduces flare and ghosting. This lens and SLR-sized image sensor combination provides natural shallow depth-of-field and attractive bokeh effect. According to the information we received, the Sigma DP2 will be available in February 2009.

Sigma SD15 SLR camera
We don't know much about the Sigma SD15 yet, other than the fact that it features the same Foveon sensor integrated in the SD14. Besides that, the Sigma SD14 incorporates Sigma's True II new image processing engine. The improved processing speed should ensure a faster reproduction of the images on the renewed screen. The size of the display on the back of the camera increased from 2.5 to 3 inch. In addition, the True II processor is expected to improve the signal/noise ratio and thus generate less image noise. Sigma too is adopting a different storage medium format. Whereas the SD14 offered a card slot supporting CompactFlash, the new Sigma SD14 will support SD and SDHC format only. As soon as a test sample becomes available, it will also find its way to our DIWA test lab to undergo various rigorous technical tests. The Sigma SD15 will become available in April 2009 as far as we know. This will be after the PMA 2009 show.
